El Camino Real or Mission Trail connected California's 21 Franciscan missions from San Diego to Sonoma and ran through such settlements as Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara. The missions were founded in the period from 1769 to 1803; each was a day's travel apart and linked by El Camino Real.
Today the route of the Royal Highway is marked by a series of cast iron bells, which can be clearly seen at 2-mile intervals along Highway 101.
